Association copy, inscribed by the author to his first wife on the title page, “Philippa love from John.” Philippa Jubber and John Maxwell Coetzee were married in 1963. They had two children, Nicolas (1966–1989) and Gisela (b. 1968). In 1965 Coetzee entered the graduate school of the University of Texas at Austin, and in 1968 graduated with a PhD in English, linguistics, and Germanic languages. The South African novelist J.M. Coetzee is the recipient of the 1985 Prix Femina Étranger, the 1999 Book Prize, and the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature. He has been described as "inarguably the most celebrated and decorated" living writer in the Anglosphere (Poplak, 2013). Life & Times of Michael K. won the 1983 Booker Prize for its depiction of an arduous journey from civil war-ridden urban South Africa to the chracter's mother's rural birthplace, during apartheid era, in the 1970-80s.
