Meyer Guggenheim, the patriarch of the Guggenheim family, made his fortune in mining and smelting in the mid- to late-19th century. In 1901 the family merged their mining interests with the American Smelting and Refining Company, a trust composed of the country’s largest metal-processing plants, and dominated the industry for the next three decades, laying the foundation for the U.S. mining industry that exists today. With this stock certificate, Guggenheim invested in the Chicago, St. Louis and Pittsburgh Rail Road Co., a merger of the Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central RR and the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis RR, which would later evolve once more into the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis RR.
