A muse of Rodgers and Hammerstein, American actress Mary Martin performed many originating roles throughout her career including the leading roles of Nellie Forbush in South Pacific (1949) and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959). Perhaps her most memorable role was that of Peter Pan in the 1954 Broadway production for which she won a Tony Award.
