"Near the Ocean includes one of Lowell's best known poems: 'Waking Early on Sunday Morning,' which does for the sixties what Auden's celebrated 'September 1. 1940' does for an earlier decade... There are new poems written in desperate staccato; love-poems, parent-poems, poems to friends, all of them near perfect in their gravel-voiced despair" (Cyril Connolly).
