First edition of the second book of Uncle Remus stories. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with frontispiece and 19 plates by Frederick Church. In fine condition. Housed in a custom folding chemise slipcase. A brilliant example.
While working for the Atlanta Constitution in 1876, Harris “invented Uncle Remus… He published Uncle Remus pieces regularly in the Constitution, and they were extremely popular. In 1880 he collected them into his first book. Eventually, seven more Uncle Remus volumes followed. The stories Harris had heard originally were never meant to be told for the benefit of a white child; rather they were an integral part of the slave culture out of which they grew. Nevertheless, Harris made an important contribution by carefully and accurately preserving these stories” (Silvey, 296). This volume includes such tales as “Why the Hawk Catches Chickens,” “Why Brother Bull Growls and Grumbles” and “Brother Mud Turtle’s Trickery.” BAL 7125.
