Rare autograph letter and two photographs signed by Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The letter is one page, partially typescript, dated March 4th 1956 on Palais de Monaco letterhead, and reads in part “Your Eminence, It is with deep regret that I am writing this letter. Due to unforeseen events occurring in the near future, my trip had to be foreshortened and I must leave your fair city tomorrow. Please be assured that Miss Kelly and I had been looking forward to seeing you. It is very unfortunate that we will not be able to do so.” Prince Rainier has added a note in his hand at the letter’s conclusion, “I beg Your Eminence to bestow upon myself and Miss Kelly your Holy benediction for our coming union before God and believe me yours respectfully Rainier Prince of Monaco.” The letter is flanked by two photographs, one of the royal family which is signed by Prince Rainier and another of the royal couple which is signed by Princess Grace, “Grace de Monaco.” In fine condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 25.5 inches by 17.5 inches. An elegant presentation.
American film actress Grace Patricia Kelly became Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in April of 1956. Kelly gained stardom during the 1950s Golden Age of Television primarily from her performance in director John Ford's film Mogambo starring Clark Gable and Ava Gardner, which won her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination in 1954. Kelly retired from acting at the age of 26 to marry Rainier, and began her duties as Princess of Monaco.
