Item Number: 146530
Rare photograph of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip with their children. Vintage matte-finish photograph removed from a Royal Christmas card from 1955, featuring a charming photo of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip posing outdoors with their two young children, signed by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on the bottom margin, “Philip” and “Lilibet, 1955.” Additionally signed with the names of the children in pencil with another hand. In near fine condition with a small stain touching Elizabeth’s signature. The piece measures 7 inches by 8 inches. A desirable example, rare with the queen’s uncommon signature. Queen Elizabeth II only ever signed with her nickname, “Lilibet,” for very close friends and family. She was given the nickname as a young child, and it is essentially only her immediate family members who are permitted to use it.
Elizabeth II has been Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand since 6 February 1952. She ascended the throne at the age of 25, upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952, and was proclaimed queen by her various privy and executive councils shortly afterwards. The coronation took place more than a year later on June 2, 1953 because of the tradition that holding such a festival is inappropriate during the period of mourning that follows the death of a monarch.
