Roger Tory Peterson: The Art and Photography of the World’s Foremost Birder.

PETERSON, Roger Tory.

Item Number: 4677

New York: Rizzoli International Publications, 1994.

First edition. Quarto, original cloth. Inscribed by the author to writer and fellow birder Peter Matthiessen on the title page, “To Peter with best wishes Roger Tory Peterson.” With Matthiessen’s bookplate. From a childhood Matthiessen spent fishing and observing nature, Matthiessen developed a love of birds in adolescence that, along with his broader love of the natural world, carried over into adulthood. He began nature writing. His first nature book, Wildlife in America, which Roger Tory Peterson said of it, “should be the number one source volume for everyone who embraces the philosophy of conservation.” Matthiessen also received Harvard University’s Roger Tory Peterson Medal. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. A nice association.

Roger Tory Peterson: The Art and Photography of the World’s Foremost Birder contains over 150 illustrations, 100 in color, celebrating Tory Peterson's career in all the media in which he worked-writing, painting, drawing and photography. William Zinsser contributes a biographical sketch and an interview with the 85-year-old artist, who notes that he needs another 30 years to complete his projects. Leo, a columnist for U.S. News & World Report, has collected encomiums from Peterson's friends and associates. With access to Peterson's archives, Hoglund, bird-watcher and art director of Money magazine, has assembled an impressive display of the artist's works, among them many previously unpublished images.
