Item Number: 123059

Rare official photograph of Ronald Reagan receiving a Life Member Award from the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle. Lengthily inscribed by him to John Heinz, Chairman of the Inner Circle, photographed here pinning Reagan with the award, “Dear John—Can I say that’s a purple heart you are pinning on me? Well anyway. Thanks & all the best, Ron.” The recipient, John Heinz, was an American businessman and politician from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Heinz served in the United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 1977, and in the United States Senate from 1977 until he was killed in a plane crash in Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania, in 1991. He served as Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 1979-1981 and 1985-1987. In fine condition. The photograph measures 8 inches by 10 inches. A nice association.

Ronald Wilson Reagan served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989 and became a highly influential voice of modern conservatism. Prior to his presidency, he was a Hollywood actor and union leader before serving as the 33rd governor of California from 1967 to 1975. When Reagan left office in 1989, he held an approval rating of 68%, matching those of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and later Bill Clinton, as the highest ratings for departing presidents in the modern era. He was the first president since Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve two full terms after the five prior presidents did not. Evaluations of his presidency among historians and the general public place him among the upper tier of American presidents.
