Singer writes that "King received solid encouragement from two professors, Edward Holmes and Burton Hatlen." He participated in a writing workshop organized by Hatlen, where he fell in love with Tabitha Spruce. He graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and his daughter Naomi Rachel was born that year. Stephen and Tabitha wed in 1971. King returned to the University of Maine in 1977 to teach creative writing.
