British traveler and author John Carne's first literary production was brought out anonymously in 1820, and was called Poems containing the Indian and Lazarus. Carne resolved to visit the holy places, and accordingly left England in March of 1821. He visited Constantinople, Greece, the Levant, Egypt, and Palestine where he was taken prisoner by Bedouins. On being safely released to England, he began publication of several works including Letters from the East which he dedicated to Sir Walter Scott, whom he later became close friends with.
