First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author’s first book. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers as issued. In good condition. Signed and dated and Saramago who has added “Lanzarote”, the Spanish island where the author lived during the final decades of his life. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.

Although Terra do Pecado, which translates as "Land of Sin," was published in 1947, Saramago remained a fairly obsure author until forty years later, with the publication of Baltasar and Blimunda, and The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, among others. He eventually gained international notoriety when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1998.
