Finely bound new edition in book form of The Adventurer, first published as a bi-weekly newspaper edited by John Hawkesworth. Octavo, volume 3 of 4 volumes bound in full contemporary calf with red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt tooling to the spine, gilt turn-ins, engraved frontispiece. In very good condition. Ownership inscriptions.

The Adventurer was initially published in London as a bi-weekly newspaper between 1752 and 1754, edited by John Hawkesworth and with regular contributions by Samuel Johnson, Richard Bathurst, and Joseph Warton. The periodical was undertaken after the successful conclusion of The Rambler, published by Johnson as a series of short papers which has come to be regarded his most consistent and sustained work in the English language, written in elevated prose.
