First edition of this historical collection of travel accounts; from the library of General William Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, four volumes, bound in full calf with gilt titles and labels to the spine, frontispiece portrait of Charles Rollin to Vol. I, folding map of the City of Syracuse besieged by the Athenians to Vol II, folding map of the coast of Spria, Phoenice and ot the Holy Land to Vol. III, folding map of Egypt and part of the Holy Land to Vol. IV, pictorial title page to each volume. General William Tecumseh Sherman and his son P. T. Sherman’s booklates to the front pastedown of each volume. In good condition with some rubbing to the spine, front and rear panels of each volume, a small loss to the spine label of Vol. I, some toning and dampstaining to the textblock of each volume, ownership signature to each volume, small closed tear to the folding map in Vol. IV. This set was inherited by P.T. Sherman, who transferred the library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the books were held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania. An exceptional association.

Charles Rollin was a French historian and educator who published important works on history and educational reform which discarded the medieval traditions that had been lingering in France and emphasized the study of national history.
