Michael Crichton's mystery and thriller fiction has earned him the 1969 Edgar Allen Poe Award and the Writer's Guild of America Award. For his later television production, ER, he received the 1994 George Foster Peabody Award and the 1996 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. The Andromeda Strain would prove to be the most important novel of his career and establish him as a best-selling author. "He had me convinced it was all really happening" (New York Times). "Science fiction, which once frightened me because it seemed so far-out, now frightens me because it seems so near. The Andromeda Strain is as matter-of-fact as the skull-and-crossbones instructions on a bottle of poison - and just as chillingly effective" (Life). It was made into the 1971 film produced and directed by Robert Wise, starring Arthur Hill, James Olson, Kate Reid, and David Wayne.
