First edition of the account of the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg of Captain Alanson H. Nelson of the 57th Pennsylvania Infantry. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers, illustrated with two maps. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author opposite the title page, “To Mrs. Robert Knox Compliments of the Author Dec. 25th 1903.” In near fine condition.

The 57th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, beginning October 1861 and mustered in December 14, 1861, for a three-year enlistment under the command of Colonel William Maxwell. In the Battle of Gettysburg, the regiment was commanded by Colonel Sides, who was wounded in the left hand on the 2nd. Captain Alanson H. Nelson then took command. The 57th brought 207 men to the field, losing 11 killed, 46 wounded and 58 missing.
