Although Conan Doyle had not intended to write any more Sherlock Holmes stories after His Last Bow (1917), a series of silent films (1920-23) starring Eille Norwood as Holmes sparked a revival of interest in the character, helping motivate the author to satisfy his editor's desire for one more series of tales. Two of these latter stories Conan Doyle would rank among his strongest, "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" and "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (one of three stories—the others being "The Mazarin Stone" and "The Three Gables," also in this volume—narrated by Holmes rather than Watson).
