Octavo, three volumes bound in a full contemporary calf Marlborough College prize-binding, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, ribbons bound in. In very good condition.

"For 22 years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly 1500 years.
