"Sensuous, mysterious, rhapsodic, it transports the reader to another world . . . . Ondaatje's most probing examination yet of the nature of identity" (San Francisco Chronicle). It is the basis for the 1996 film directed by Anthony Minghella starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche and Kristin Scott Thomas. The film received 12 nominations at the 69th Academy Awards, winning nine, including Best Picture, Best Director for Minghella, and Best Supporting Actress for Juliette Binoche.
