English cultural historian and poet John Addington Symonds was known for his work on the Renaissance, as well as numerous biographies of writers and artists. As a student at Oxford, Symonds "gained brilliant distinction, obtaining a double first class in Classics, and the Newdigate Prize for a poem on 'The Escorial'." (DNB).
