Finely bound 19th century printing of Gustave Dore’s famed illustrated Bible; one of the most lavishly illustrated Bibles ever produced. Folio, two volumes bound in three quarter pebbled morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, ribbons bound in, illustrated with 103 full-page engravings by Gustave Dore, clean family registers. Volume one contains The Old Testament: Genesis to Solomon’s Song. Vol. II contains Isaiah to Malachi, Apocrypha, Esdras to Maccabees and The New Testament: Matthew to Revelations. In near fine condition. A rare and desirable example of Dore’s famed work.

French artist Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré remains best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings, especially those illustrating classic books which achieved great international success. Upon publication in 1860, The New York Tribune declared of his illustrated Bible: "No illustrated Bible has ever equaled this in the artistic merit of its pictures" and The New York Times called it: "not simply good, but of a rare degree of excellence."
