First edition of one of Greene’s own favorite works. Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Set on the shore of the Paraná River, this classic thriller novel further explores the themes of exhausted passions and absurd hopes that Greene developed in his earlier works The Power and the Glory and The Comedians. At the center of the novel is Eduardo Plarr, perhaps the most moving and convincing figure in Greene's fiction. The Honorary Consul was made into a film in 1983 starring Richard Gere as Eduardo Plarr and Michael Caine with a soundtrack composed by Paul McCartney and performed by John Williams.
