First edition of this complete, fully documented, and authoritative story of Herbert Hoover’s four years as President. Octavo, original navy cloth, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Hoover from the drawing by Clarence R. Mattei. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by Hoover on the front free endpaper, “Dear Mrs. Bent, This is not my authorship but I am for it and I am glad you have it. Sincerely Herbert Hoover.” Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a chip to the front panel. Rare with such a lengthy inscription.
The 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover wrote more than two dozen books throughout his lifetime, including The Challenge to Liberty, a harsh criticism of the New Deal. Hoover feared that the New Deal was a threat to the country's "freedom of mind and spirit." He criticized he National Recovery Administration and Agricultural Adjustment Administration as "fascistic," and the 1933 Banking Act as a "move to gigantic socialism."
