The title story is a horror tale that has been anthologized several times. "My Lord the Baby" concerns reincarnation. "The Kingdom of Cards" is an allegorical fantasy. "Living or Dead" is a horror tale. A mystical streak runs through Tagore's fiction, not to mention his plays and poetry (of which he wrote over 100,000 lines). The author was educated partly in England, and he translated some of his own work into English, as well as sometimes composing in English. He received the Nobel Prize in 1913.
