Written as the memoir of a fictional Scottish doctor in the employ of Ugandan President Idi Amin, Giles Foden's 'The Last King of Scotland' interweaves fiction and historical fact to illustrate Amin's rise and reign as dictator from 1971 to 1979. Upon its release, the novel received multiple awards including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the Whitbread First Novel Award, and the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize. It has since been adapted into a film by the same name directed by Kevin Macdonald from a screenplay by Peter Morgan and Jeremy Brock, which debuted to raving success, grossing $48.4 million on a $6 million budget.
