Marcus Mills Pomeroy was the editor and publisher of Wisconsin periodical La Crosse Democrat and, despite its relatively remote location, exerted a great influence on the politics of his day. His newspaper had a circulation of some 100,000 in 1868. In this work Pomeroy takes on Benjamin "the Beast" Butler, the Union general famous for his bold political and military methods used during the Civil War, especially for his Draconian policies during the occupation of New Orleans. Butler was elected to Congress as a Radical Republican from Massachusetts in 1866. and was among the leaders in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. Sabin 63930.
