A series of short episodes in contemporary London, Sir James Matthew Barrie's most famous and enduring character Peter Pan, first appeared in The Little White Bird. Ranging in tone from whimsical fantasy to dark social commentary, the book achieved longevity due to the several chapters featuring Peter Pan, a magical boy who escaped mortality as an infant and, since then, carelessly cavorted with fairies on the mythical island of Neverland. In 1904, Barrie adapted the story into his most famous work, Peter Pan; or the Boy Who Wouldn't grow up, a play which debuted in London and a later a novel by Hodder & Stoughton in the United Kingdom and Charles Scribner's Sons in the United States. The play was later adapted as Walt Disneys 14th feature-length animated film, Peter Pan, released in 1953.
