The Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1900, chosen and edited by Arthur Quiller-Couch, appeared in 1900. It rapidly established itself as the classic anthology of English poetry, running through twenty-one impressions in the next forty years and selling nearly half a million copies. In 1925, Quiller-Couch published a companion to his verse anthology: The Oxford Book of English Prose, which soon became equally as successful as its predecessor.
