British military historian Piers Gerald Mackesy taught the subject of military history at the Universtiy of Oxford from 1954 until 1988. He authored several works on the subject in addition to the present volume including The War in the Mediterranean, 1803-1810, and British Victory in Egypt, 1801: the End of Napoleon's Conquest, which was awarded the Templer Medal. The War for America is a contemporary reassessment of the British conduct of the American War of Independence including examinations of the Rockingham and Shelburne Ministires.
