New York: Simon and Schuster, 1968.
First edition of Portis’ classic work, basis for the 1969 John Wayne film and the 2010 Coen Brothers film starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Octavo, original cloth. Signed on the title page by Charles Portis and additionally boldly signed by John Wayne on the front free endpaper. Wayne famously played U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Davis. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Exceptionally rare and desirable signed by both Portis and John Wayne, we have never seen another one.
"It is a delight," wrote Walker Percy about Portis' western: "Mattie Ross from near Dardanelle, Arkansas, is here to stay, like Huck Finn." True Grit tells the story of a young girl's search for her father's killer "begins where chivalry meets the frontier" and introduces Rooster Cogburn, immortalized by John Wayne in the 1969 film adaptation that won him an Academy Award (Guardian).
