Washington Square.
"Young men of this class never do anything for themselves that they can get others to do for them": First Edition of Henry James' Washington Square
Washington Square.
JAMES, Henry.
Item Number: 81149
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1881.
First edition of one of Henry James’ most popular novellas. Octavo, original illustrated cloth, gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, frontispiece with tissue guard present, illustrated. In very good condition.
Often compared to the work of Jane Austen for its graceful prose and focus on family relationships, James' Washington Square relays the tale of the Sloper family, particularly the widower Dr. Sloper and his daughter Catherine and her unrequited love for the insensitive Morris Townsend. Catherine slowly gains perspective, wisdom, and independence from both her cruel father and heartless lover; the description of this slow development was considered a notable success for James and was revered by his readers.
