Robert Falcon Scott appointed Thomas Griffith Taylor as Senior Geologist of the Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica, he led the first geological expedition in January of 1911 with the objective of exploring the coastal area west of McMurdo Sound, in a region between the McMurdo Dry Valleys and the Koettlitz Glacier.
