Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with photographs. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Timothy Jacques.

Despite the extraordinary variety of his achievements, it is sometimes forgotten that Winston Churchill's earliest claim to fame was as a war correspondent. From the Northwest Frontier, from the Sudan and from South Africa he sent despatches to the Morning Post and the Daily Telegraph which won him a reputation, at the age of twenty-three, equal to that of W.H. Russell and G.W. Steevens. These despatches were used as the basis for two of Churchill's earlier books, The Malakand Field Force and The River War, but the despatches themselves have never before been reprinted.
