The plate features a portrait of Churchill flanked by rampant lions and surrounded by a botanical gilt border. Founded by Josiah Spode in 1770, Spode pottery is renowned for perfecting the technique for transfer printing in underglaze blue on fine earthenware and credited with developing, around 1790, the formula for fine bone china that was generally adopted by the industry.
