Early printing of Paine’s Rights of Man Part the First and Part the Second. Octavo, disbound. With the textual error to the date of publication to Part the First reading 1742. The first part of Rights of Man was published in February 1791 by London publisher Johnson, but was immediately suppressed. With difficulty Paine was able to secure another publisher in London, J.S. Jordan. The second part was first published in London by Jordan on February 1792. In near fine condition.

First Philadelphia reissue of The Star Spangled Banner, printed using the same plates as the first printing. Folio, four pages, engraved sheet music with American flag vignette. The national anthem of the United States was first published under the title "The Star Spangled Banner" by Thomas Carr in October 1814 in Baltimore and was subsequently reprinted in Philadelphia by A. Bacon & Co. in November 1814. This reissue was produced using the same plates as the first Philadelphia printing (BAL 11080, 247; Filby & Howard, S-12). In very good condition. Octavo, original brown hard-grain cloth with spine and boards lettered and ruled in black, decorative endpapers, illustrated with economic graphs. In very good condition, embossed stamp to the title page and some additional pages, library stamp and sticker to the rear pastedown, some rubbing and bookplate to the front pastedown, "the Library of Isaac L. Rice presented in his memory to the Bates College Library." Rice was a German-born Jewish American businessman, investor, musicologist, author, and chess patron known primarily for his contributions to aquatic transportation manufacturing.
